Crowns, also known as caps, are constructed in a
variety of ways according to individual need, typically using porcelain
to resemble natural tooth appearance. A crown is usually provided to fit
over broken or damaged or worn-out tooth structure that is beyond the
scope of filling in functional or cosmetic terms. By crowning, a the
position of a misaligned tooth may also be improved. Your dentist will
need to prepare the tooth and take an impression (mould) to send to the
dental laboratory where an individual crown will be constructed and
returned for fitting, usually two weeks later.
