More than half of the adult population of the UK has at least
one missing tooth, and a decision must be reached whether a tooth or teeth
need(s) to be replaced. It is considered reasonable for up to four back teeth to
be missing and not be replaced, but where more are missing or where adjacent
teeth are missing, it is more important to replace them for reasons of stability
or function (chewing). Missing front teeth and first premolars may also need to
be replaced for cosmetic reasons.
